The RS-485 Unit Load and Maximum Number of Bus Connections

Texas Instruments
The TIA/EIA-485 (RS-485) standard defines a Unit Load and confines bus configurations to 32. This report explains the Unit-Load concept and how it relates to the maximum number of bus connections. Fractional Unit-Load devices such at the 1/8th Unit-Load SN65HVD21 and SN65HVD06 allow up to 256 devices on a single bus segment.

DN-41 Extend Current Transformer Range

Texas Instruments
The problems with self reset of current transformers for unipolar pulse applications can be overcome with simple forced-reset techniques derived from magnetic amplifiers. Duty factors above 90% are achievable with these techniques. This design note describes a circuit configured for forced reset and a configuration that generates a negative voltage from the current transformer.

Smart Selection of ADC/DAC Enables Better Design of Software-Defined Radio

Texas Instruments
This application report explains different aspects of selecting analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog data converters for Software-Defined Radio (SDR) applications. It also explains how ADS61xx ADCs and the DAC5688 from Texas Instruments fit properly for SDR designs.

How delta-sigma ADCs work, Part 1

Texas Instruments

Analog techniques have dominated signal processing for years, but digital techniques are slowly encroaching into this domain. The design of delta-sigma (DS) analog-todigital converters (ADCs) is approximately three-quarters digital and one-quarter analog. DS ADCs are now ideal for converting analog signals over a wide range of frequencies, from DC to several megahertz. Basically, these converters consist of an oversampling modulator followed by a digital/ decimation filter that together produce a high-resolution data-stream output.

This two-part article will look closely at the DS ADC’s core. Part 1 will explore the basic topology and function of the DS modulator, and Part 2 will explore the basic topology and function of the digital/decimation filter module.

Sensored Field Oriented Control of 3-Phase Perm Magnet Sync Motors Using TMS320F2837x

Texas Instruments

This application report presents a solution to control a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using the TMS320F2837x microcontrollers. TMS320F2837x devices are part of the family of C2000 microcontrollers, which enables the cost-effective design of intelligent controllers for three phase motors by reducing system components and increasing efficiency. With these devices, it is possible to realize far more precise digital vector control algorithms like the field orientated control (FOC). This algorithm’s implementation is discussed in this document. The FOC algorithm maintains efficiency in a wide range of speeds and takes into consideration torque changes with transient phases by processing a dynamic model of the motor.

This application report covers the following:

  • A theoretical background on field oriented motor control principle
  • Incremental build levels based on modular software blocks
  • Experimental results

TPS6519x Power Dissipation Estimation in Typical Level Shifter Application

Texas Instruments
The power dissipation in a LCD gate-driving circuit is shared between the level shifter output stages and the parasitic components in the display. The dynamic characteristics of the level shifter output stage and the parasitic component values are frequently unavailable. Thus it is often difficult to estimate the power dissipation. This application note presents a method to evaluate the power diss

Frequency-To-Voltage Conversion

Texas Instruments
This bulletin describes three techniques for making a precision FVC using a VFC. The standard technique has high precision but high ripple or slow settling. Adding an output filter can improve the settling-time ripple trade-off but adds error. A third new technique can eliminate ripple from the FVC output and improve settling time by more than 1000/1 as compared to the conventional FVC. Moreove
